In some cases a judge may ask member of the public to leave the court to protect a young person giving evidence, or a video link may be used. If the police interview you as a potential witness, you have the right to remain silent. If you so wish you do not have to appear as a witness in court, unless a witness summons has been issued. Should you still fail to appear you could be fined or sent to prison for contemt od court.

yes, one of the option would be to apply to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority for compensation under its scheme.
